Portrait
We anxiously approach our lives
using the Earth as our
canvas, looking desperately for a
blank space to fill, a
place to sign our names
Fear not, for you print
your presence with every footstep
You immortalize a piece of your
soul with every beautiful word
you leave upon someone else
Your name will not be
remembered forever, but you are
capable of starting a chain
reaction of positive outpouring that
never loses its momentum if
you do it just right
Who wouldn’t want to leave
an anonymous warmth so strong
it melts the ice of future
generations before it even forms?
Isn’t that a better mark
to leave upon the Earth, than
a name that will someday
(far off) be just as
empty as any other word?
I believe in this with
all of my earthly being.
