The Power to Change

They told me I had the power to change

And as I grew older, I still believed

Just to a degree that couldn’t move mountains

Or ever a small child’s train

They told me I had the power to change

“Go out and redirect the course of music”

“Find kids who don’t know how to read,

Show them a book and tell them how to use it”

Tell them “read it left to right”

As I read right to left

Because as I grow older

My instincts move backwards

And what was once “I can”

Has now become societies “I can’t” standard

They told me I had the power to change

And boy did I believe them

And even after trying to move children’s trains

Donating change, volunteering, leadership teaching,

And changing lanes for the old lady struggling on the freeway

I still believed I could change

I still believe I can change

But there are so many out there who do not

Because society has tied their knot

Telling them “they will not”

And “you cannot”

But if I could change anything

I would convince those

Whose are convinced their knots are tied

To change that “cannot”

To “why not”
