The Power of Poetry

When life breaks me into pieces

It doesn't happen all at once

It is a gradual chipping away

At the pieces of my soul

The light within me fades

Into nothing but a shadow

My smiles grow dimmer

And my eyes lose their shine

Although my spirit darkens

There are some things that remain

Piercing through the darkness

Refusing to evaporate

These things are full of wonder

Of words so rich and bright

Of color and of spirit

Of hope for something new

And though I'm trapped in darkness

These things will help me see

For even the blackest clouds

Can be extinguished by poetry

Poetry has taught me

That even sorrow can hold beauty

That someone's else's end

Can be someone else's beginning

It has taught me about love

In all its many forms

And helped me see that losing

Can be just as great as winning

When I'm surrounded by the darkness

And am unable to see

I ponder words and stanzas

And finally am free
