The Power of Poetry
When life gets too heavy
and my thoughts get in the way
I turn to my paper and pen.
As the ink flows onto the paper of my notebook
my frustrations are released
in the form of something beautiful.
Words.
Words that will make you smile.
Words that will make you cry.
Words that help me to preserve someone forever
as I heal from what died on the inside.
Through my words I vent
and through my vents I work
in an endless cycle of creativity
-of falling apart -
and piecing myself back together again.
Soft and steady is my hand
as it guides my pen across the paper
in loops and swirls
in a passionate and eloquent dance of Cursive.
Sometimes my head pounds.
Sometimes I cry
and the tears smudge what I’ve written.
Sometimes I smile like a fool.
In the end,
I look back at it and title it.
I write the date at the top
and then,
it is done.
Something old turned into something new.
Memories and experiences into poetry;
the love child of my heart and my head.
My work.
My art.
My soul.
All encompassed between the silent pages of my journal
that scream a story that has never been told.
A story of love,
of loss,
of boredom
and of excitement.
Poetry has taught me more
than the secret to lasting sanity.
It has taught me life.
