Power in the Step

Step Onto the bus Rosa, strong and ready, Because racism and oppression are heavy. Make the first strike of the match, And hope that the spark will catch. Step on the bus with your head high And courage by your side, For you are pushing us forward. Step Down the street of Montgomery, Martin, Because change is something to take part in. The chance of being truly freed Is far from guaranteed, But you step on the beat of hope and Ensure that we will not be broken. They will meet you on the road with hoses and canines, But you step on, clutching God and biblical lines, Because you are pushing us forward. Step Forward people of oppression, And let out your expressions. The boycott is nothing without you, And change is way past due, So step forward to new times, With shouts and picket signs, Fighting off crazed canines, And bearing blasts of water, Because this is for your sons and daughters. Be the mothers and fathers Of freedoms and rights. Give it all to win this fight. There is no patience left, And let the truth be kept, That there is true power In the Step.
