The Power of Words
While building a city of words
Inside a poem, book, or story,
I discover a sense of awe, that
Words, when placed on paper,
Dwell in a palace of their own.
With the help of their careful author,
They rule the world with an iron hand
While either hanging in the air or
Sitting poised upon the ground.
When the writer says “short and sweet”,
The words will chuckle and plot
Within the writer’s active mind
Of ways to catch the listener’s ear
Or explode on the reader’s eye.
They use no weapons that we can see;
Only meanings we often don’t.
The writer only needs a few
To form his most deadly army
That either dispels doubt and fear
Or instills confusion and terror.
So when you ask me why I write,
The answer is simply thus:
Words can pack a punch,
Or even just roll off the tongue,
But using them wisely holds power,
Indeed, that can’t be measured.
