The Power of Writing
I’ve had a passion for spoken word for the longest time now.
But, I never thought I was capable of becoming a poet.
I knew I had the desire to write,
To open up people’s minds.
However, my writing creativity was concealed,
Unable to be revealed.
I felt like it was locked up in a safe that couldn’t be opened.
Why? Because I couldn’t find the missing key.
My creative juices were just running through my blood and veins.
They were like a volcano about to erupt!
Oh, I was just an undercover poet,
Waiting to be released from my cocoon.
I found this missing key by asking myself… why?
Why did I want to become a poet? A writer perhaps.
But the real question was…
Why did I want to write?!
Through my words, I want to send messages and educate
My people, my community, and the youth.
Whether it’s about how more than one-third of U.S. adults are obese,
A shooting that started at a Toronto nightclub event,
Or even how a mother from Virginia asked the school to fail her daughter.
You name it! I want to write about it
I want to write about my place of relaxation.
Where the sunlight sparkles on the sand
And the ocean’s waves crash against the cliffs
A place that puts me in a peaceful state of mind.
I want to write because my passion for music inspires me to write.
Music is something I can never let go
With every harmony and melody
It warms my heart and touches my soul.
Every song on my playlist has something I can relate to.
And when I am feeling some type of way,
I want to write about that too.
That way, I can pour my heart out
And emotions onto a piece of paper.
Instead of having to be interrogated
By someone about my personal matters.
I continue on about why I want to write,
But my main purpose of writing
Is so those words written on paper can be heard.
So then maybe I can make a difference in this world.
I want to leave something behind.
Like a mark, something that will indicate I was here,
And that I’ve made a positive influence on others through my words.
If I engrave my name on a tree,
Then when I die…
My name and what I have accomplished will be prominent.
As long as my voice is heard,
I can make an impact by getting messages across through my words.
Just know the pen is mightier than the sword
And violence isn’t the solution to your problems.
Through writing you can communicate
And change people’s perspectives.
The power comes from my brain.
It’s the neurons that send signals,
They are electrifying and ignite.
Ideas just start flowing from left to right.
A new born poet has arrived,
You will not be dissatisfied.
And this is why I write!
