Prejudice

Prejudice

Itś the thing you did without knowing her story

It is where you told your son to ¨be careful and keep your things close¨

And you only said that because she had a different color than everyone else

Prejudice

It is the thing you did without knowing that she grew up in a town where the graduating class was 50%

From graduating she went to college and became successful in the medical field

But you wouldn't know that because all you did was make a glance and judge her

Prejudice

It is the thing you did without realizing how easy your life was compared to hers

You didn't have to worry about money

You didn't have to worry about making sure there was food on your plate

And you didn't even have to worry about becoming a target of gun violence

Because while you were crying from scraping your knee, she had to figure out how to get through life without putting herself in danger

Prejudice

It is the thing you did that made her feel segregated to the point where she wanted to cry

And the worst part is she didn't stand up to defend herself

Because she felt silenced and hurt

prejudice

It is the thing that comes in different categories

Like putting someone that speaks differently in one

And someone who acts differently in another

But in this case it was the category of color

prejudice

It is the thing everyone is held accountable for

It is the thing where no matter how hard we try not to judge, we still end up doing it
