Prescribed Happiness

Behind the bright skies,

Deep in the city,

Hunger grew.

Sold and bought,

Traveling through the night,

Into eager hands.

With the pop of one pill,

It broke lives,

It had the power to destroy all ills,

Calm all diseases,

It is perfect.

But it's euphoria was vast

Urging us for more,

Making happiness the new norm.

Taking more and more,

It began to give less,

Turning its back on us.

Destroying lives left and right,

Children gone before they came,

Life became meaningless.

Till the day came,

Just like the others,

Who couldn’t resist its charm,

With a pop of a pill.

Our bodies gave up,

Breaths hitched,

We never woke up.
