A Present

We have been the stars, the wind,

the waters feral and quiescent. When we met we were merely reconnecting,

coloring our souls with those careful contacts

then ebullient, bold colloquies.

We weren’t always sure of ourselves, but we were sure love was the highest power.

Pursuing that most ambitious ideal, we came to this now,

this spectacular, precious now.

My words aren’t perfect, but I know you will recognize what I have to say.

We were of the world;

then the world wandered from us. Temerarious,

we clasped each other’s hands and proceeded into the fright of

faltering and falling. We were defeated at times in our endeavors—

distance was salvation and malignancy—but

we remained, which is of highest virtue. For perseverance determines the person,

and perseverance we possess, we are, we can barely contain.

A bit more or less and we’d cease living or cease being.

Imagine again the miasma. In my head I could hear your music

despite darkest times. I have never been alone.

The first girl shattered my sky, and you sought to do similarly, render her

to shards even though we were not on best terms.

We returned to the first remembered meeting place.

Afraid, I avoided everything, especially you, who were dear but dangerous

as you knew what resided within my not so hollow body,

not so steeled skin. You waited for me to feel safe, and I waited for you

when circumstances carved into your conscience.

Words I wrote with the sincerity of every cell, keeping you as selfish

or saintly it may seem. We returned.

Sometimes there need not be a purpose. There are words I never say, but

I am them in every way. You are here or there, a small matter. We live

in the wishing well, on a remote control, among the brightest yellow petals of

the lovely lingering dandelion.

Ambrosia is tasteless compared to tresór. We feast upon absurdities,

philosophies, and ramen. Perhaps no one will ever

know what transpired, but we will have our ideas and plans,

the fruit of our hearts.

I depart now from these words, but more will come to adore you. I will

never lose these coherencies.

When I am dull and done, you remind me I am more.

I yearn for slumber, but speaking with you is sweeter than any dream. We are real,

and we have futures wondrous curious.

Eden is within us if not around us.
