The Preservation of Warmth

The warm ash sky of a cloudy day

Floats calmly over brownstone apartment foundations

Like the hearths at the beginning of the world,

The memory of walks with my grandfather are illuminated by the comforting embers of nostalgia

We journeyed a world of pavement to watch those buildings grow

Bricks of chocolate and oak climbing towards the blanket of clouds

But as life became too busy for our adventures,

I return to see brownstones completed.

A monolith to the past warmth of childhood

Soon to depart to the next chapter of life,

I yearned for a glimpse into the time I saw stone extend towards a radiating sky

I feared the embers would lose their glow

As the clock ticked away the fuzzy, fading warmth of those walks

Driving past those buildings on another cloudy day

College essays on my mind

I felt the memories of the past replace the stress for the future

The past was no longer a light to chase after

Rather a foundation of my own life

To build a tower

Tall enough to be wrapped in the warmth of that cloudy day a decade ago

So my life can tend to the embers from the beginning of the world.
