Pride
I’ve been told about the writings of St. Thomas Aquinas.
And of all the venal and mortal sins,
St. Thomas sees pride as the queen of the seven deadlies.
According to the Oxford-English dictionary, pride is:
“the quality of having an excessively high opinion of oneself or one's importance.”
But why does “pride” typically carry a negative connotation in our society?
My sense of pride is what keeps me going day to day.
To me, pride is our sense of self-being.
How we perceive ourselves and our own lives,
and our opinions on ourselves.
Personally, I try to be as good of a person as I can.
I’m no paragon of humankind, of course,
but I still strive to be as good of an example as I can.
I take pride in who I am.
Some might view this as a bad thing.
But, to me, it’s all there is.
How can I accomplish everything I do and have done,
And keep pushing to do better than before,
Without that sense of pride?
I feel that we should all take pride in who we are,
And work together,
So that we can all achieve a better tomorrow.
So go fuck yourself, Aquinas.
