Princess
Wish I could go back to the days
Of innocence
Of truth
The days of my childhood
Where I could say
"Mommy I'm a princess"
And believe that I really was one
That my hand me down dress
Was a ball gown
My house
A castle
My bed
A thrown
And no one could convince me otherwise
...
Funny how that truth fades so quickly
How easily the lies come
How easily I believed them
...
That princesses
Dont wear hand me down dresses
Princesses
Dont have to worry about rent
About their next meal
Princesses
Are supposed to be daughters of kings
But mine left when I was 6
I dont remember
If he ever called me
His princess
...
Princesses
Dont exist in real life
Princesses
Only exist in movies
Princess
Is something I was called
Before he touched me
I've never heard of a princess
Being touched
So maybe I'm not one at all
...
These are the lies
I have chosen
To believe
...
That life is no fairytale
That I should stop putting
False hope
Into Happily Ever Afters
Into One True Love
Into Dreams Do Come True
That I should grow up
And face the reality of things
That in real life
Royalty is something only a select few were born into
Not something we were all born as
...
These are the lies
I have chosen
To believe
...
Wish I could go back to the days of my childhood
And tell myself
To grab a hold onto truth
To squeeze it tightly
In the palms of my small hands
As if I had caught a shooting star
I would tell myself
To not let go
To not let it slip it through the cracks of my fingers
Even as my hands begin to grow
And my ears become accustomed to the lies
Life has to offer
In those moments
I would tell myself to hold truth even closer
Because I know how easily it is to lose
And how hard it is to get back
...
If I had held on to truth back then
Maybe I would still believe
That I was a Princess
