Prison Wall
Prison Wall
by t.a.mayes
There was a man who set out to build a wall
He thought and he planned for it never to fall
Starting out on a dull day laying the first upon ground
Finest bricks one could imagine, no other could be found
Toiling and laboring, a solid fortress he set to make
Each one mortared securely, there would be no mistake
Higher and higher this strong wall did rise
His intentions were clear, there being no disguise
To keep people away, no one is welcomed, keep out
His heart was cold, a wall of hatred constructed about
Until one day too high, his ladder no longer reached
Compassion gone, refusing to love as Jesus had preached
Still angry at the world he sought some relief
Drinking and drugging soon led him to a life of grief
Til one day his body began to fail, his soul in despair
He pondered some help but could he so dare
He was tired of the booze and tired of the dope
A voice he barely recognized gave him a thread of hope
Raising his arms up he prayed God to show a way
To escape his self made prison no longer could he stay
God did lift him high so that the man made a discovery
A happy, joyous and free life he now had in recovery
