Promise to the forgotten

Long ago when I was child

I knew a friend who would always cry

He would sob at everything

So many laughed at his expense

But I always tried to make him happy

We would talk for hours about games we played

One day, on a hot summers eve

We were eating ice cream on the curb

He asked me

"Can you promise me someting?"

I said sure

"Promise me that you will never let this world break you as it did me."

I agreed, without hesitation

The very next day I learned that he left

To another town in the west

It has been 12 years since that day

The face of my old friend I have long forgotten

But the promise we made on that hot summers day

I will always remember
