Promise of Poetry

What is sweeter than the love words make to the ears? Pen to the pad? Nothing I can think of.. Ever since I can remember standing up for myself I have written. I first wrote in 5th grade to my crush after holding in my feelings for three tiresome months. I wrote to the first girl to ever call me sweetheart. For the first girl to hold my infatuation in the palm of her hand and gently refuse it. I write to release the pain of dried tears and a boy's empty heart that only wants to experience a taste of love. A child once wrote that poetry is the essence of his soul. His heart pumps syllables through his veins. Each breath released is a stanza. Poetry is far more than life for one who swears by it daily: It is eternal. Poetry endures long, believes in all, hopes in all. It never fails even when I do. What if I told you that poetry is more than the words we scribe to express our freedom, but that poetry is bondage? It bound me to so many people and forced me to accept that the world needs change. It needs peace, Or at least some piece of mind. What else could satiate the hardened hearts that only seek acceptance? Because war can't and drugs can, only when we are killing ourselves. I write because even before I was named, I had a heartbeat that represented something worth dying for. From birth, I was labelled a boy Although I feel I'm just the dust from Adam and Eve: The first humans to hear the Word AKA, the first love poem. Love poem. This is redundant since poetry is love. Poetry is true love. How else could it possibly contain everyone who's ever lived and died? Everything that has ever caused your cheeks to acknowledge your temples, A friend to share a laugh with, The important kiss at a wedding, Even the tears at a funeral, It's all poetry. I write because I've always had words, but I began to poetry the moment I promised her I would enter a contest in eighth grade. Back when I wanted to prove myself to not only God and the world, but to the girl that would become my bestfriend. I hope this scholarship slam will suffice.
