Promises

At the start of life you promised You gave to me a dream Of guts and grime and glory Of greatness' glitt'ring gleam I walked down the road, believed you My mind with visions filled Of damsels rescued, dragons slain My heart within me thrilled As I came of age, I noticed The promised glory fade The distance increased, walls grew tall While evil had it made But still I walked your marked out path I trusted in your word Against my vicious demons strove Your promises my lord And with adulthood I realized Your promises were lies All the treasures I was seeking But rotting flesh and flies In that darkness long I wandered Lost, searching for a light And 'spite all else I treasured still The hope of promise bright Then marked by age I abandoned All hope of promised dream Thus into hell I entered in The pit where despair teems There I trusted nought but anger Held hatred as my guide Counted life a long, cruel road while Your promise within cried Now at the end I understand Your promises were true And once I looked with eyes of faith I saw what my heart knew That though the dragons seemed to win Damsels to demons fall A backward glance sees through the ash Your promise conquered all Dear child, you're at the start of life Your future's shining bright His whispered promise as your guide Throughout life's dreadful night Never give it up as I did Although its hard to see For though life's road is dark and dim And all your demons seem to win Though muscles tear and your bones break And life from you all vict'ry takes Here at the end you'll see it too His promises are true Jesus' promises are true
