Protagonist

Study the styles, examine the tones,

learn the rules, and break them.

Alliteration, oxymoron, simile,

an epic, a sonnet, a haiku:

literary terms for classic forms and seasoned methods,

that can be found in a bound book.

Free me from the effective epithet,

and the meticulous metaphor,

rejoice in Thoreau's pure nature,

and Shakespeare's timeless love-

All have guided my hand.

Who am I but the court reporter for this soul?
