Proud
I lay my head down
in my final hour,
my muscles drained
of all their power.
The bombs burst
nearby on the ground,
sending dust flying
all around.
The guns rage
with just one thing in mind.
I glimpse mangled bodies;
I wish I were blind.
The planes fly high
in the darkening sky,
focused on the mission
whether live or die.
The war rages on
late into the night.
Neither side's caving
nor winning this fight.
Soldiers drop
as bullets pierce hearts
while artillery shells
tear people apart.
Yes I lay my head down
overcome by a cloud.
This I know before I die:
I made America proud.
