A Proud Black Woman
A PROUD BLACK WOMAN
I’m a proud black woman by the name of Rosa,
Thinking about racism takes a lot of my time.
I have nothing to hide especially not my pride,
So what really makes them think I’m going to get up for a white guy?
I have many times before
And have been threatened that i’d get beat to the floor,
But I was tired this day and didn’t have much to say.
He looked me in my eyes,
Expecting me to rise.
But I stay seated.
This is the day that I took a stand,
I continually told myself
I’m not standing up for no white man.
Our mistreatment was just not right, and I was tired of it,
People always say that I didn’t give up my seat because I was tired, but that isn’t true
The only tired I was, was tired of giving in.
I was called a sin
But still didn’t give in.
The police put me in cuffs,
And I questioned for what?
We need more equality and I can start the change with me,
At this point I wasn’t worried about no police!
There was never a time where blacks weren’t in sight.
We filled up the streets through the day and the night,
We all had a dream,
That our rights would be met,
Martin had spoke, and he spoke with his chest.
We all kept moving and let nothing stop us.
We walked to and from work
There was no getting on the bus,
The movement kept going and still hasn’t stopped,
And racism is a problem that will never be dropped.
I am a person with dignity and self-respect,
And I should not set my sights lower than anybody else just because I was black.
That’s how I want to be remembered:
As a black woman who made it better for the next.
When you speak,
Speak with your chest.
And no matter the person
Or Action
Or hurt
No one should ever make you question your words.
