Public School

Hello, my name is Amber.

I’ve been in Detroit Public Schools all of my life.

I write well, read better, and comprehend completely.

I study hard, complete my assignments, and pay attention in class.

According to my peers I am smart. According to others I am not.

My test scores are below average, my reading is not proficient, and my math score are lacking.

Who shall my hindered skills be accredited to?

The student who comes to school everyday eager to learn?

Or the failing school system?

The student that makes sure she fully comprehends every lesson that is taught?

Or the school district that carries a $327 million deficit?

The student who won’t sleep until all of her assignments are finished?

Or the school district with a shortage of teachers, books, and proper technology ?

Compared to other districts I am 2 years behind my grade level,

but my grades are good.

I will be accepted into an accredited 4 year university.

I’ll think I’m fully prepared until I am in a classroom filled with students who are faster, stronger, and smarter in each subject.

“Go to public school!” they said.

You’ll be provided opportunities, teachers are more qualified, and the population is diverse” they said.

In order to save money 50% of extracurricular programs have been cut, over 2,000 layoff notices have been sent to teachers, and my classes are segregated.

You pay to go to private school but it pays to go to public school.
