Pulchritudinous
The word pulchritudinous has to do with someone having breathtaking beauty
The kind of beauty that makes eyes widen and mouths water
I have always wished to be possess that sort of beauty
I suspect every father wants that for their daughter
The day I met her I learned I could never compare
She taught me to value her beauty but never my own
Put me down at every opportunity to make herself feel better
She was my best friend, yet I had never felt more alone
Whenever we would go out somewhere together
I would always watch the boys gape
Wishing that they could at least stand beside her
When all I wanted to do was escape
The harsh words knocked me down further each day
But I thought I was lucky just to be her friend
To stand so close to perfection was endearing
Who knows when I would be so close again?
It took five years and four months to break out of that trance
I walked away without as much as a goodbye
I have never regretted that day
The day I took control of my own life
I no longer flinch at my reflection in the mirror
My smile is no longer fleeting
Metal teeth and all I proudly grin
Offering a wide smile with every greeting
And though my hair will not stay down
And my face can never be as clear as I’d like
There is no one else I would rather be
I’ve never felt more right
So what if I’m not a size zero?
I’d rather have curves any day
Who cares if I don’t fit your definition of smart?
I still have a 4.0 GPA
Though I am aware I am talkative
People accept me just the same
The reason I speak a lot
Is because I have a lot to say
And so I may not fit society’s definition of pulchritudinous
May not have the aesthetical qualities that people crave
But who cares? I woke up like this. I’m flawless
And after all this time, I’m brave
Something wrong with this poem?
