The Purpose of Poetry
Poetry can be silly
Like poetry about potatoes, tomatoes
Grapes, giblets, gravy, and grub!
You're covered in it Tom, just get in the tub!
Poetry can make you think.
Oh where is this soul of mine going,
beating a restless path in circles.
I know these footsteps, I have been here before,
Fifty times, and still not a thing have I learned,
But that's life, isn't it, my son?
Poetry can be wonderfully romantic,
My love, my love,
You are not a separate being,
You are but part of my soul,
I feel more love than my capacity allows,
My love, my soul,
You have taken my heart captive.
Run away with me dear,
Gaze at the moonlight with those beautiful eyes
Somewhere else!
Far from complexity, far from rules,
Nothing but the rhythmic tidings of the ocean to distract us
Poetry can be tragic.
You are gone
I am tormented every second
Thinking about the hours we did not get to spend together
That damned boat.
Damn the Titanic, damn the whole ocean for taking you away,
My heart isn't broken.
Its gone, utterly gone.
Sunken, to the bottom of the ocean.
With you.
Poetry isn't just one thing, one word
It can spring thoughts and ideas,
It can provoke smiles,
Or tears.
The Purpose of Poetry is different for every poet.
My poetry is meant to amaze.
Whatever it be,
Silly, Romantic, Tragic, Thoughtful..............
It is meant, simply,
To amaze.
