A Question and A Response
"What IS art?"
That is what they all ask,
to explain, as it seems, is truly a task.
The question is asked over and again,
you say you know, but it's hard to pretend,
how do you explain , how can words comprehend?
How do you explain blocks of colors that flow,
or the abstract expressions, or the strokes of Van Gogh,
how can you compare Van Eyck to Rococo?
Is it the way you lay down the lines,
Or the effort you give or the hours of time,
Or is it the way left and right brains combine?
Is it the people who lived before,
the ones who exceeded and pushed themselves sore?
In your heart, this is true but you know it's much more.
Tell them, with a rise of heart rate,
that art is to simply create,
it's universal, meant to differentiate.
Respond that art is about your intent,
no matter how "crazy", it's yours to invent,
rework, redo, represent, to your fullest extent.
But do not forget what is perfectly true,
no matter the job or the life you pursue,
that when the question of art is in view,
Know that art is more than what others can do,
It is the world which you find
within you.
