On the Question of Race

Location

They ask me to write down my race,

And I think, and think

And consider writing down the truth

And have my answer read like this:

I have a mother who is a rose that has beauty and love

She cooks and cleans and has a job

So I can eat and sleep in my home

Inside this body

I have a father who’s like a lion, tough and the leader of the gang

He stresses with the thought of surviving another the day

Relief hugs me tight to know that I’m safe

Inside this body

I have a special friend, to get me thru day and night

This book is basically the tour guide of my life

It gives me certain answers when I’m not sure its right

Inside this body

But they ask me to write down my race

And I think, and think very seriously

And consider writing down the truth

And have my answer read like this:

I have a chicken, home made like TLC

Fried chicken on the skillet so crunchy and juicy

Smells like a sunny afternoon while it tastes so crispy

Inside this body

I have a Tongan flag that is a fluttering butterfly

It feels smooth with its deep meaning, blood red with pure white

White for Jesus Christ’s pure love and red for the blood of Jesus Christ

Inside this body

Yet they still ask me to write down my race

And I think, and I think very seriously

And consider writing down the truth

And have my answer read like this:

I have a tall and brown inspiration, an artist known as Ryan Leslie

Ryan shows some passion, so his fans see his emotion

The music is a sling shot when it hits me hard with its lyrics

Inside this body

I have been blessed with many talents

Yet I am only known for one, academics

It makes me feel important, and so I love to share it

Inside this body

I have belief in my Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost

Because many people look down on my religion, it hurts me but I can’t let that stand in my way

I live it and stand strong in my belief, with every day, night, and breath I take

Inside this body, I am Tongan, Samoan, British, German, and American

But I stop,

And simply write down Pacific Islander
