Quien Soy Yo?

Am I really Latina?

Siento que soy diferente comparado a otro latinos

I have no religion but all the other latinos do…

Me puedo llamarme latina o un wannabe

My mamá is Mexicana y my dad es Guatemalteco

Does that make me Latina o tengo que comportarme como los estereotipos de latinos para hacer Latina

I am discriminated for being Latina and soy discriminada por no comportarme como una Latina

“Oh look another one that is gonna take our jobs in the future.” es lo que dijo mi maestra de 5th grade cuando me vio

I didn’t understand at first, quizas porque era chiquita

At first I thought she didn’t like me because I’m a brat

She would make small remarks like “Go back to Mexico and speak spanish there” or “we are going to lose more jobs in the future”

Pero as I got older, porfin entendi lo que dijo mi maestra o mejor dicho what she meant

I guess she judged me by the color of my skin, o el acento en mi voz

I don’t understand how people can hate our race so much

Because I’m Latina people hate me and judge me

Already they judged by the colors of our skins we are from Mexico

I have seen many families Latinas celebrating many traditions, mientras yo me siento en la esquina

Traditions are not my thing, I don’t see a point in them

Muchos celebran Quinceañeras en las tradiciones latinas but not in my family

They never celebrated mines, solo el de mi hermano y hermana

Quizás no celebró por la falta de familia or maybe because I’m antisocial

“Por qué no hablas?” decía mi mamá

“Por qué te importa?” le respondí a mi mamá, which earned me a smack across the face

“Nunca puedes ser nada bien.” is what my family would say

Most Latinos have neutral family relationships, pero a mi, mi familia me bajan mi autoestima

Entiendo a veces hay problemas de la familia, but in the end the family resolves it and they visit each other occasionally

Not mines, en mi familia apenas nos comunicamos and when we do, it’s often negative

No hay apoyo en mi familia, instead we harm each other with our words

I haven’t seen my uncles or aunts in years, después que decidió mi papa to isolate them from us

What I see in my community are Latino families juntos, pero cuando veo a mi familia solo noto extraños

“Why do you go to school, si eres tan lenta en tus estudios?” dice mi hermano

“Says someone who can’t even go to college after two years of graduating high school!” le respondí casi a punto de gritar

I work hard in school despite of what my brother thinks or says

I continue to go to school because this is my goal in life, even if others find it hard to believe que una latina tiene educación

Why, because I vowed to continue my education for her and for myself

La educación es mi futuro

“She can’t win third place she’s a wetback!” is what someone yelled cuando estaba en MESA competition

“Ain’t my fault I’m smarter than you!” es lo que yo le respondí

I had won third place in the Solo Math en MESA competition, hasta yo no lo podía créelo

I was the only Latina that won Solo Math

Me, a Latina achieving something in academics

Cómo es posible, maybe since I have grown to believe these stereotypes I doubted myself

Why should I follow stereotypes

I mean, no son verdad, right?

Porque I’m not a dropout from high school and I’m Latina

Tengo 16 años and I’m not pregnant y soy Latina

So why the stereotypes

Por qué no puedo ser myself

What makes someone Latina, the stereotypes o sus origins

I may not listen to hispanic music o celebrar tradiciones

But eso no significa que no soy Latina

Sure I don’t follow religion, y escucho Death Metal

Pero eso no significa que I’m not Latina

A veces hablo japonés envés de español, but that doesn't mean I'm not Latina

Yes I cook, but I for myself no por un hombre

Yo solo limpio lo que yo ensucio

What I do is for me, no por un hombre

“Eres mujer mija, tienes que aprender como mantener la casa, lavar toda la ropa, y cocinar para todos, especialmente para tu esposo.” is what my mom would say

Pero yo no voy a seguir ese camino

I wash my own clothes, I clean what I use

Y yo cocino por mi misma

“No, just because I’m Latina doesn’t mean I have to do that.” es lo que yo respondia a mi madre

Si esa es la definición de ser Latina, then I should change the definition

After all I am Latina
