Quitting

As a middle schooler I went to things enthusiastically.

Running was my passion-

It was throughout my family.

I felt the legacy running in my blood as I thought of those before me.

I began high school in full force,

Cross country and swim were my life.

Each day I gave my all, and I was happy.

It was no surprise that by my junior year,

I decided to try out track instead of swim.

However, things do not always go as expected,

And I slowly realized that it would be impossible

To complete the season.

I was broken

But I refused to give up.

I was crushed

As I tried to balance

Everything in my life.

I felt things falling apart

At every turn

And the things I cared about most

Began to slip away.

As I felt the weight crushing down on me, and I was nearly broken

By the stress put on me by myself at every turn

My friend took me to dinner

She reminded me of myself,

And she taught me the truth that I needed to hear-

Sometimes in life you have to quit something to allow change

To make its way into your life

To grow up I had to let the past go so that I could move on to the future

I had to reflect on what I needed,

And allow new things to make their way into my life.

Sometimes life takes us on paths that do not fit our legacy,

We are tried by our own challenges,

And in the end we must decide our own destiny.

The hardest part is letting go of what we know

So we can allow ourselves to grow
