The Race
Two years before college and it starts
The pressure increases on our hearts
Before we begin we are already behind
And the money to afford this is hard to find
Not yet seniors and the privilege is burden
College is now a race to decide what is uncertain
Pick a job with good income that’s hiring
Not interests or dreams, just society’s wiring
Today, I am in college and almost halfway there
But in high school I felt this pressure to be really unfair
And still to this day I am frustrated with the race
Can I not live my life without putting on a face?
This makes money and that is unsteady
But this is mindless; that is passion and passion is plenty
Yes, there are reasons for the pressures of competition
They are readying us for the world and its affliction
But how sad I do feel that our youth is ended so quick
Adulthood means stress and stress is just sick
Life is for the living, for wanders and journeys
Not for the machine, for the money, for the earnings
Teachers, do your best to teach independence to the teens
But do not ruin eagerness with the killing of their dreams
I wish I had had more time to enjoy the remaining childhood
Instead of being forced to be as early and overachieving as I could
To finance what should be encouraged as a time of learning
I am stressed to my max to find what I love but makes an earning
