Racing Thoughts

Introspection is a dangerous thing, for thinking of your thoughts,

Offers naught but a biased interpretation.

Even though I should just be saying I’m thinking what I ought,

My review descends into gross overcomplication.

You cannot look into your eye, and all know it’s foolish to try,

And surgeons do not operate on themselves, unless they’re mad,

So though I find a shameful thrill, to evaluate my inner wills,

I know any view I have is just a fad.

When I wake up every morning, I look back on my faults,

Ashamed of thoughts thought and actions done,

Though my character stays consistent when I leave well enough alone,

When I speculate, it all unravels quickly.

One day I feel myself a council, or with cartoonish moral shoulder guides,

Or with half a brain for order and another half for fun,

Soon enough the thought’s dismissed, no explanation can persist,

And compounded it can make me rather sickly.

When I think too much it can consume me.

I ramble off into unintelligible self fulfilling prophecies.

The trouble with thinking about your thoughts, is your thoughts on thoughts and thoughts unthought are much too close inside the mental plane and get mixed up.

If I have a thought on how I think,

Then I think about that thought,

And thus think it, making me justifiably correct.

Until I think something new, and the same thing happens, so I was wrong and have been wrong including every time I thought I was wrong before.

Sort of like a sugar pill you’re told will yield results,

And your mind makes it work on it’s own merit,

And being told afterward it was all in your head,

Except every single moment of your life.

They say I am creative, smart, and talented as any other,

A successful student, artist, leader, role model, son, and brother.

And I can speak on most any topic, within reason and prior knowledge,

Except introspection.

Then you’ve lost me.
