Rapunzel's Awakening
Rapunzel’s Awakening by Nicholas Jones, 04 August 2017.
I’m tired of throwing it down,
And waving it around,
Waiting for a man to come my way,
So today I’ve decided,
I’m going to try it,
Letting myself down for a change,
I’ll walk over the hills,
With my hair falling behind,
And I’ll pay no mind to the jealous kind,
Their words never meant much to me,
No less to me than bees to birds,
No more to me than letters to words,
Hair so gold it renews itself,
Hair so long it can’t go anywhere else,
I’ll walk and I’ll run and I’ll smile with glee,
Because I don’t need a man to pull on my hair,
Using my roots as heartstrings,
To tug on my heart – because he could never find it,
Anywhere else,
No – not today, I say,
Today is the day I open my eyes,
To the fairy tale world steeped in lies,
Today is the day, I say,
I’ll open my mind to what my heart wants to see,
And I will love myself the way,
All of the little girls want him to love me.
