Reality Check

Do you know what it's like

To tell a little boy

Or a little girl

That Santa isn't real?

To break their little hearts,

Their hopes,

Their dreams.

And that, my dear,

Is reality.

And sooner or later,

We will all have to face it.

It all started like this.

She was innocent;

An innocent, little girl.

Cheerful, hopeful,

You can name it.

She was minding her own business,

Until Daddy came in.

Daddy said,

"Come over here."

And, she did.

She listened.

She looked up into his eyes,

All confused and frustrated,

But she didn't know what lied ahead of her.

And then,

Daddy yelled,

"Unlock this phone, right now!"

She didn't know what to do

But she knew she respected her mother's privacy,

So she said no.

"No, I will not unlock the phone."

Daddy was mad,

Took her to a room

And broke her little heart.

He said,

"Mommy has been cheating."

5, 4, 3, 2, 1.

Her heart stopped.

She couldn't believe what she had heard.

Was it real?

Was it true?

She was a freshman,

A freshman in highschool.

She didn't know how harsh reality could be.

And this was her first encounter.

She dragged herself into the restroom,

Knees wobbly.

Then, she fell;

Fell to the ground,

Hands in a fist,

Nails digging into her palms.

Though hot tears fell down her rosy cheeks,

She remained quiet,

Trying real hard to hide the fact that she was scared.

She didn't want her parents to know;

To know that she was crying.

She wanted to tell her dear old sister,

But she couldn't.

Her sister had just gone abroad.

So, she didn't say a word.

She just continued to silently weep.

But, it was in that moment that she knew;

She knew she was a big girl.

Reality is harsh

But sometimes,

Just sometimes,

We must face it,

Whether it may be alone

Or through the help of others.

And so,

Reality made her stronger

And way more independent.

She learned to face,

Conquer,

And move on!

So, there it is.

My reality check!
