Rebirth
Always and never the old saying goes
The wind in my hair and the sand twixt my toes
As I walk through the valley of fear and regret
I tell myself things are not so far gone yet
And despite facing daily the riddle of why
And gravely observing the days that go by
I have decided not to give in to my doubt
Or the sullen resentment that wears us all out
For many of my generation have thought
That hope is a luxury we haven’t got
Every day in the news, down the street, down the block
There is suffering, pain, and the march of the clock
Toward the next greatest tragedy we’ve ever seen
Our genius is waning, our cunning is mean
Ingenuity, cleverness, used for destruction
Our own selfish nature our biggest obstruction
It prevents us from doing what needs to be done
The one tool for affecting change now is a gun
We’ve forgotten the principles on which we were founded
And left behind all the things that kept us so grounded
Our fame and our victories went to our head
And now so many innocent people are dead
We ignore our allies and wage war over seas
Ignoring all advice, counsel and pleas
We broke the economy, turned friends into foes
Long and tragic is the list of our collective woes
But I must say, as I have said before
That now is no time to flee out the door
We must hold together, we must remain strong
Too long we allowed ourselves to be led wrong
This generation is given the directive
To come up with solutions that will be effective
At healing our culture and ending the pain
So some semblance of our great legacy can remain
We were once truly the greatest nation on earth
And now is our chance for glorious rebirth
