Recovery

I once knew a girl who had eyes

like the sun.

Her smile so bright and so big

such a delight.

Everything she said everything she did

a skip in her step.

Over time her eyes dulled out

now like the sea

When overcast is heavy but still

with a shimmer

Her smile is small but still

with some hope

And everything she did and everything she said

was slow and slurred.

I once knew a girl with eyes

dark as night

No shimmer, no hope, no way

out of the abyss

Her smile was a line or

forced through fear

And everything she did and everything she said

she did through her tears.

I know a girl with eyes that

have known pain intimately

Her eyes of determination

that won her fight

Her smile knows of pain late

at night

And everything she says and everything she does

is for the recovery of others
