Red Grass
Where the grass grows red
They should never know it was to be green.
A louder laugh at a funnier joke
Where a smile’s worth is known because of sadness’ weight
In the same way,
You do not know the biggest person you can be
Until you are broken, battered, bruised.
It is a curious thing
To define a character.
We are our strengths
Our flaws cast in the shadows behind.
But to drag our weaknesses and cover them in dust
Is when we forget to appreciate.
The capacity to fail
Is the ability to succeed, the chance to rise again.
It is a perilous fight
To renounce ourselves
Because we celebrate victory
When the last ones surrender.
But where determination makes us strong
And the will to stand grips us to no end
Kneel before what makes us weak.
The warming breeze sweeps a flower into bloom
A revival after a bitter winter’s freeze.
In the same way that we know the grass grows green
We are wholly human, mistakes etched in between.
