Regrets


“Regrets”
The beeping of the monitor is unnerving,
 
like a countdown to my final breath.
 
Does one always feel so undeserving
 
of something as inescapable as death?
 
 
I wish I had pursued my dream career,
 
seen a few countries I can’t pronounce,
 
or lived life day by day, not by years.
 
 
I wish I had time to write the next “Great American Novel”
 
or refurbished that car,
 
or at least that beat up old motorcycle.
 
I wish I found time for that dancing class,
 
although tango isn’t my thing,
 
spending time with you was something I should never pass.
 
 
I wish we had adopted that puppy we eyed,
 
I would have loved him around,
 
even though walking is something I had always despised.
 
 
 
I wish I knew where my friend is, my old schoolmate.
 
After graduation we lost touch,
 
I hope he's living a long happily in another state.
 
 
I wish I had made a point to see my kid dance at her recital,
 
and had lasted long enough to walk her down the aisle.
 
 
Spending time with family (I see now) is something most vital.
 
I loved watching how our affection grew,
 
And I want you to know that I never regretted “us”,
 
and that I love y-
