The Regrets of Narcissus

Zues, Poseidon, Hades

The big three

The rulers of Mount Olympus

Well, not anymore

Because its 2019,

And my influence is everywhere

I am Narcissus,

And I fell in love with myself after seeing my gorgeous reflection

I am simply that handsome

I have worked tirelessly to augment my power,

And in the current age of technology

This has been remarkably easy

I invented Twitter and Instagram

Facebook and Snapchat

And every other social media platform known to Prometheus’s creation

Humans are obsessed with themselves!

They constantly post short videos,

And 140 character tweets,

And selfies

So many selfies!

Their love of themselves gives me power

When they worship their bodies on Instagram,

They really worship my body

And when they send 100 snapchats a day,

They really make 100 sacrifices to me

My power is immense

But wait.

I don’t feel good about this.

They don’t love themselves like I do.

No.

They hate themselves.

Kids as young as 8 have body dysmorphia

And short attention spans

They lack an appreciation for nature

And actual relationships with other humans rather than with screens

They feel constant pressure to be perfect

Look perfect!

Act perfect!

And if you’re not perfect..

Well...

They are cyberbullied.

They receive cruel comments everyday

Usually from anonymous sources

Which only makes it worse as there’s no one to stand up to

How do these kids cope?

Many don’t.

Even when others try to help them like Echo tried to help me

I didn’t survive.

I killed myself.

Which is exactly what these kids are doing

Phoebe Prince. Sadie Riggs. Molly Russell. Channing Smith. Thousands more.

What have I done?
