The needles prick sticking
and the liquid flows licking the sides of the tube
with a red-bleeding tongue
while my chest rises slowly,
my lungs breathing, heaving
great sighs of relief

The cold rushes in,
seeping, heaping my heart in emotion
and motioning my body to crave it

“Just drink a little more,
just beg a little more
off that friend who you met
behind the fulton street store”

I feel the pull, and I’m ransacked by guilt
Blood spilt last week for my nighttime addiction
Can’t even remember the last time control
was more than a goal for me to work toward
