The Releasing
I have been chained up by society's expectations for so long.
Each time I try to fit myself into the box they have created, I always end up hurt.
I have spent days looking for a way to be accepted by my peers.
But each way failed.
I remember going home crying because I felt like I failed.
I failed at acting like someone I wasn't,
I failed at looking like someone I wasn't.
But it was easier,
It was easier to be something I wasn't than to be something I was.
Because when I was myself, it was more painful to hear hate, than to hear hurtful things about the person I was trying to be.
I was exhausted and numb, from the daggers that pierced my soul.
But in my heart, I felt guilty and angry.
Why would I allow myself to be imprisoned by words?
Why would I disguise myself, when the poison was still the same?
So I broke the chain...
I escaped from the demons of society's perfection.
I took out my Brazilan weave and rocked an afro.
I wiped off my makeup and revealed the beauty that God created.
I left anxiety at the door and approached darkness with light.
The fear of the thoughts of others overwhelmed me, but the words of the Lord triumphed over.
" You are fearfully and wonderfully made".
Even though the daggers are approaching me, I will not be chained again.
I am free!
