Remember Me, Future Self
Dear future self,
Life as you’ve known it is going to change quite soon.
Be wary that you don’t forget who you are
where you came from
what you’ve lost
what you’ve gained
who you are
Composed of distinct quality, I am unique.
A product of my surroundings, my education, my family, myself.
No person can be replicated to exactness,
I am me.
I am a trail on Knife’s Edge,
The narrow path of rock that I rest my faith upon.
I stand reminiscing on natures existence,
To what is now limited to the confines of these parks.
I am the cabin in the harbors of this province.
This state bore my roots, to where we return every year.
These parks bear my heart, solely where I feel complete.
The spectacle is bigger than life, the serenity unfathomable.
This divine providence is my eternal source of comfort.
I am a victim of perfection.
Perhaps where my love of the natural world evolved,
Where its existence is exclusive to.
Its unattainability frustrating to compulsivity.
Perfection became an addiction—
I don’t know why, I don’t know how.
I am a repairman of unbroken things,
Trying to improve what is already sufficient.
Never settling for less or anything shy of the best.
Though, perfection is nonexistent,
This fact will take time to comprehend.
But for now I will continue to fight it,
to no avail.
I am a doodle in a notebook.
The product of a student failing to contain their creativity.
Crushed by reality, my creative aspirations will never flourish.
These dreams have slowly turned into the doodles in a notebook
and songs hummed to myself when I am alone.
I am a bird that sold her voice,
the voice of a careless child singing on a whim,
receiving books and reality in return.
Stumbling upon this revelation too young,
I traded my paintbrush for a pencil,
and receive each lecture for a song.
Our experiences compose us,
The places we’ve seen, the things we’ve done.
From what we look like to where we’re born,
Each individual has their own song.
And I contently sing the song of myself.
Sing the song of yourself until you can see no more
speak no more
write no more
