Remember Me Not
Do not remember the man,
But do remember the story.
Remember my cause
And all that I ever stood,
All that I ever marched,
All that I ever spoke for.
I was but a man
Who is long gone,
But my actions last.
Do they remember me?
Do those who opressed
And stepped over me
Still remember me?
Do they remember the skin
Which, in disdain, they saw
As inferior.
Do they remember this
Poor chattel burdened
By the weight of injustice?
Remember me not
For I am only flesh,
But ideas are everlasting.
Remember my voice
Shouting over shouts.
Remember my face
Erupting in passion.
Remember my soul
That shined purer than
Any other.
Remember my cause.
Remember the story.
Remember the blood.
But my body needs
No remembrance.
I was the helping hand
Easing the black man's burden.
I was the fierce roar
Over the whimpers of compliance.
I was the righter of wrongs.
I am the end of injustice,
And I am not done.
