To Remember A Song

A girl too young to know Which words she should memorize Thinks little of her mother’s songs Only when to close her eyes Playground days of wandering Feet hot as if on coals Leaves a small girl hoping, though she won’t admit, For that lullaby when she gets home She hums herself to sleep Not knowing the words just so Her heart soars out between the walls Collecting the next line, reports its flow The sleep song fully hers, she thinks She’ll change it to meet her needs Wraps herself in blankets, she blinks There comes no magic musical stampede Somewhere under the surface, she knows Churning there is the tune Leaning forward, desperate wanting glows Gazing up, beseeches the moon The pulse a whirring softness Remembrance teases close Lyrics like cold snowflakes Disappear quicker than they froze Desperation bows to calm Though the song evades her still Lying in wait, her mother’s psalm Must choose its own moment of reveal
