Resilient

You may hear the word and think no big deal 

But resilient is what I am 

Life has thrown me curve balls 

Life has gotten dark

Life has turned on me without a second thought

But resilient is what I am 

Where I am from very few make it out 

Very few touch success but I knew I had to break the chain

Sometimes it's hard not to get filled with doubt 

But I was awarded the opportunity to go to college and use my brain

And just when I started touching success the dark part of life came creeping about 

But resilient is what I am 

I took losses at a very young age 

I saw things that a child should never see 

But I got close with God let him be in charge and turn my page

Just like they say when good comes bad comes too 

But resilient is what I am 

With all of the losses, obstacles, and failures in my life 

I am proud of where I am and how much I have overcome

I am a black girl from Southeast, Washington, DC 

Who was the first person in her family to graduate college 

And who will continue to strive for excellence no matter what comes my way 

Because resilient is what I am
