Resurrection

Let love live
Leave love alone

As a child we know nothing but the basic needs
And yet we love unconditionally
Our mothers for the milk of her breasts
And the warmth of her heart
Our fathers for the rough of his hands
And the tickle of his beard
We let love live for it was all we know

But as we grow life throws us into positions and pits
Forces that puts us up against troubles
Troubles intent on fighting that unconditional love
Right out of our hearts

As we approach adulthood all we practice is hate
For it is all we see
Hate our mothers for her constant requests
Her failing trust in our judgement
We hate our fathers for his harsh scolding
His discontent-filled stares
We forget love because we forget to see it

Do not attack life's simplest emotion
With the weapons life uses to wage war against us
Do not cut love with the swords of anger
People raise against you
Do not shoot love with the guns of mistrust
Our pasts have pressed into our palms
Do not strangle love with the noose
Impatience has wrapped around our necks
And I beg you please do not burn love
With the fire that fear has lit under our curious hearts

When we get old and we sit back
And we ask life where the love has gone
We will see that we are the ones who killed it

Let love live
Leave love alone
