Reversing the Tide

I open my eyes and what do I see?

War, poverty, greed and misery.

Drugs and alcohol are found everywhere

Hiding the fears of those beyond care.

There is so much hate in the world today,

Hatred of those who are black, poor or gay.

Can we not all just take a look around,

And see what destruction on our earth can be found

Partisan conflict is tearing us apart,

Selfishness, indifference, apathy, at its heart.

But you can stop it from getting worse,

You have the power to make blessing from curse.

Make the change you know you should.

You can do it if only you would.

Give up the idea the world’s ours alone,

We own it not, it’s given on loan.

And if we are good stewards here,

We may yet live for many more years.

Do not scoff at what I say,

You know in your heart its worth doing today.

There is a task only you can fulfill,

That task, small or large, depends on your will.

The very next time you walk down the street,

Smile and welcome all whom you meet.

Reflect every day, though you may think it odd,

on the good we’ve been given by a lovely God.

Look daily for ways to help others you know,

And serenity will find you wherever you go.

And this I pray you will someday discover,

Whether you’re a prince, a child, or a mother,

That hand in hand, singing this song,

Someday and forever we will all get along!
