The Right To (Not) Fight
What is wrong?
What is right?
I can't stomach this fight
So in an effort to appease
And avoid becoming like these
That throw swings
And maneuver blows
In the name of Love
In the name of Love
I take off my boxing gloves
I exit the ring with my head down
Breathing out defeat
To the sound of applause
I gave them what they wanted
To hear
Not what I really believe
I will not injure to prove a point
And if "standing up" for what I believe in
Requires looking down
On those that disagree
Or can't yet decide what to think
I will refuse to move from where I sit
Crying compassion
And exhaling empathy
In the midst of what you call
"The least of these"
While you use righteousness
As a weapon
And construct the fear of flames
Into tools that can wield hearts to heaven
Don't forget
All that you have was given
On knees that are worn
A heart taut and torn
With hands that find themselves
More in fervent fists than
Their formally clasped palms and fastened fingertips
I kneel down to beg for forgiveness for you
Something I know you're probably doing for me too
But spare me your dismay
I am not "going astray"
I am just trying to make my way
To the God you taught me to obey
