The Right to Write

Sitting here in your class trying to pass the time

Feels like I’m suffering for some petty crime

You tell me to write out what I’m feeling,

But you can’t seem to handle what I’m dealing.

You tell us to speak our mind,

Take our time,

Think about what we’re going to do

And to do with our stories as we choose.

Yet when we give you what we got

You tell us to stop!

That what we’re writing isn’t going to work

And the school wouldn’t approve of this written work.

So you say the school won’t let us write what we want?

That to me seems a little daunt.

I say we should use our God give right

And put up a fight

For our freedom of speech

That the school is sucking out of us like a sick leech.

Fight for the right to write!

The right to say what we think is right

And the right to to say how we feel

and what should be done to keep that feeling real.

Because if we don't

then who will?
