Rise And Fall

Time is a human construction.

Haunted by the beating of our hearts,

by the steady thump

thump-thump

that was sometimes so loud

we couldn't sleep,

we harnessed that power;

counted off one after another.

We used our hearts as timepieces,

and named the hands on the clock

after the ones that so often clutched

at or aching chests.

We made time.

We used it to control

everything we couldn't possibly know.

And now time uses us.

We are prisoners of our own invention,

Inescapable Time,

that passes us by

like it's trying to escape us

while we try desperately to break free

of the implications of aging

and the past

and the dark void of the future

where seemingly nothing lurks.

We are all doomed by this monster;

This devourer of lives;

This destroyer of memories.

We've made this bed of ticking hands

and rushing minutes,

and now we must lie in its sheets

sewn of hours lost dreaming,

over a mattress stuffed with days spent

on things that have been forgotten

with each revolution of the Earth,

misplaced by the circular nightmare

that we nail to our walls.

That we fall on our knees to praise

each morning and night.

We made time

and now with each passing second

time molds us.

Has molded us into what we are today.

Time builds us up .

and with each passing second

we are torn down,

ruined by time.

I'm from South Dakota and I love poetry. In every spare moment I am composing lines to new works in my head, and I am always working to gain inspiration from everything around me. I play the piano, guitar, ukulele, banjo, and percussion. I love to draw and I love anything that involves zombies. Someday I will see the world.
