The Rise and Shine

its the smell of chocolate pancakes
that rouses me from sleep
the feeling of my warm socks
against the wooden floors
early sunday mornings spent
with family and chocolate smiles;

its the ringing alarm
my phone shrills it
every weekday
that pushes me
from my warm bed,
but more than that-
its the thought of
waking up in a dorm room
the next 3- no, 2-, now 1 year
from now
that pushes me out of bed;

its the midday sunlight
on saturday
that shines across my face
coming in from my open window
that pulls me awake
telling me half the day
has gone away
and its time for me to wake
