The Road
75 miles an hour
We were moving down the road
Talking of the pie we just ate
And quizzing one another on likes and dislikes
55 miles an hour
We were slowing down
The car was overheating
And so were our feelings
0 miles an hour
We stepped out and took a look
He was pissed and irritated
But I was cool and collected
I tried calming him down
120 miles an hour
He texted his sister
And called his dad
He screamed at his sister
And asked his father for help
10 miles an hour
We waited and watched as cars went by
I asked him if he wanted to wait in the car with me
He said no
0 miles an hour
I watched him texting a friend
And then I saw it
He was to be leaving back to college from winter break
Eight days earlier than expected
10 miles an hour
I began to cry
The tears streamed down my face
And I went into the car for shelter
150 miles an hour
I
Sobbed
Uncontrollably
We were
Trying to make this
Work
But it just wouldn’t
380 miles apart
The long distance was so difficult to cope with
And I missed him every day
There were going to be two weeks for us to see each other
And now it was just one
4 Months of pain and sorrow
Struggled
To materialize
In my mind
Half-realized words and phrases
Climbed mountains to get out of my mouth
3 feet apart
He opened the door
He asked one question
“Do you want to break up with me”
“I don't know”
I said
1,000 miles separating our minds
I thought and I thought
We were supposed to spend our lives together
We were supposed to be happy
But the distance
Was tearing us
Apart
I didn’t know what to do
So I sat
And I sobbed
And I thought
Until it hit me
2 Hearts separated by nothing
Love is not without struggle
Such as life is not without struggle
We reach trials
We climb mountains
And we grow stronger
I still loved him
As I always had
75 miles an hour
His dad came
And we got in the car
And drove away
On the road
Leaving behind pain and sorrow
And driving into a new realm
Of love and commitment
