The Road and River

What humour is to be found,

In the road and in the river,

One of man,

And one of earth.

Both wind.

Both lead.

But one is not

Quite like the other.

For man's eternal quest

Is mimicked in those winding roads.

That lead forever on,

And go forever high.

And earth?

What of her rivers?

So like the human road,

And yet they stop,

Her decree,

There is an end,

Must be an end,

For nothing goes forever on.
